HAND TIED HAIR JIGS

Producing hand tied hair jigs is a dying art form.  Once the standard by which all jigs were measured, they were displaced by living rubber, then silicone. The majority of the OG lure makers who produced the best ones, have been lost to time sadly enough.

I learned to tie hair jigs on a home built picnic table, seated atop one of those old school rocking steel patio chairs,  beneath a Magnolia tree, beside the bird feeder, outside a little 2 bedroom white framed house, situated atop the incline ,on the only level piece of ground, at a place called Mockingbird Hill, about a mile or so east from my fishing and hunting playgrounds back then, along the shores of Seven Islands and Hufffaker's Ferry on the French Broad River,

There were usually a pack of off duty hunting dogs including a couple beagles, a basset hound or two and a good boy yellow lab that belonged to the neighbors milling around my feet, while my Great Uncle Rueben watched me use his vice to make one mistake after another.  We started with squirrel because that was easy to acquire (all you needed was a .22 rifle and good aim).  Over time the student learned.  As i got better, we advanced to deer tails.

On my 12th Christmas Eve in 1982 I opened a plain brown box with a Sears and Roebuck stamp on it, that was wrapped in green paper, to find my very own fly tying vice, a few spools of thread. and a paper bag full of hand poured ball jig heads he cast for me to tie. It was one of the greatest gifts I ever received.

It's the only vice I have ever owned and It's still in use today. Every hand tied jig ever made by me or made for PPJ has been tied on that vice.

I lost my beloved Great Uncle in fall of 1995 just as the fall colors hit full radiance.  I helped carry him to the family plot directly beside the river, and I sent a one of my best ones with him for the trip into eternity. Because he used to tell me he knew for sure there had to be vast rivers full of smallmouth in heaven and one day he would fish them all.

The student is still learning and Uncle Rueben's legacy lives on.
